Pablito the Penguin

Pablito was the first pattern I posted in Etsy :)
Hope you have fun crocheting lots of little penguins!



Materials you'll need:
Little amounts of black and orange worsted weight yarn
A little piece of white felt
Blue and black embroidery floss, tapestry needle
Size I/9 (2.5 mm) and F/5 (4 mm) crochet hooks
Fiberfill or stuffing of your choice

Finished measurements:
Diameter of penguin base is approx 3.0 inches
Penguin height is 3.5 inches

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
cont = continue
hdc = half double cochet (UK: htr half trable)
Rnd = round
rep = repeat
sc = single crochet (UK: dc double crochet)
sl st = slip st (UK: sc single crochet)
st(s) = stich(es)
WS = wrong side
* = repeat directions between * * as many times as indicated


INSTRUCTIONS:

Body
Pablito’s body is worked in rounds.
Using black yarn and I/9 hook:
Rnd1 – Ch 2, 5 sc in first chain
Rnd2 – 2 sc in each sc around (10 scs)
Rnd3 – *1 sc in first sc, 2 scs in next sc*, repeat 5 times (15 scs)
Rnd4 - *2 sc, 2 scs in next sc*, repeat 5 times (20 scs)
Rnd5 - *3 sc, 2 scs in next sc*, repeat 5 times (25 scs)
Rnd6 - *4 sc, 2 scs in next sc*, repeat 5 times, (30 scs)
Rnd7 - *5 sc, 2 scs in next sc*, repeat 5 times, (35 scs)
The diameter of the circle should now measure approx. 3 inches.
Rnd8– 1 sc in each sc around (35 scs)
Repeat Rnd8 until body height is approx 3.5 inches, 1 sl st in next sc, bind off.
Weave in loose ends.

Body Base
Repeat instructions for Body up until Round 8, 1 sl st in next sc, bind off.
Weave in loose ends.

Arms (Make two)
Arms are also worked in round.
Using black yarn and I/9 hook:
Rnd 1– Ch 6, 3 sc in second chain from hook, 3 sc, 3 sc in next chain –you are now in the other half of the chain-, 3 sc.
Rnd2 – *3 sc in next sc, 6*, repeat once
Rnd3 - *3 sc in next sc, 8 sc*, repeat once, 1 sl st in next sc, bind off.
Weave in loose ends.

Legs (Make two)
Using orange yarn and F/5 hook:
Rnd1- Chain 6, 1hdc in third chain from hook and each chain until end (4 hdcs)
Rnd2 – Chain 2, 1 hdc in each hdc until end (4 hdcs)
Rnd3 – Repeat Rnd2, bind off.
Weave in loose ends.

Beak
Using orange yarn and F/5 hook:
Rnd1 – Chain 6, 1 sc in second chain from hook and each chain until end (5 sc)
Rnd2 – Skip first sc, sc in second sc, sc in next sc, skip next sc, sc in following sc.
Rnd3 – Sc in third sc from hook, bind off.
Weave in loose ends.

Tummy
Cut out a circular piece of white felt.

Assembly
Look at the picture to get an idea of the whereabouts of each piece.
Sew legs to WS of body base. Stuff body and sew to base (so legs are in between the body and the base, and the right side of the base is showing at the bottom). Fold arms in half and sew to sides of body. Sew beak and tummy to Pablito’s body. Using blue embroidery floss, make him a pair of eyes.

It's been a while!

We recently moved to a new place and it took *forever* for Verizon to come over & install the Internet. I hadn't noticed how addicted I am! Now that everything's set and running I feel like myself again ;)
I'm sorry I haven't answered posts or convos or e-mails as fast as I wanted to, and sorry for not posting any new patterns either.
I'm back, though!

On a totally different note, We found a place here in NJ where they sell all these things from Uruguay! I've been eating bizcochos and dulce de leche and drinking good Canarias mate non-stop & it makes me super happy :) It helps to "tame" the homesickness (is that a word?)

I'll post Pablito's pattern now, it's time to take him out of the shop.

Cat & Mouse :)

To make the cat and the mouse you will need:
Odds and ends of worsted weight yarn
6 and 9 mm plastic eyes with safety backings (optional)
Embroidery floss, tapestry needle
Size F/5 (4 mm) and size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook
Fiberfill or stuffing of your choice


Finished measurements:
Cat’s height is approx. 7.5 inches if standing and approx. 6 inches (without counting ears) if sitting. Depending on your tension and the yarn you use, she might end up being a little bit taller or a little bit shorter :)

Use the F hook to crochet the cat J

Muzzle:
R1- Ch 2, 5 sc in second chain from hook
R2- 2 sc in each sc around (10 sts)
R3- *Sc 1, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 5 times (15 sts)
R4- Sc 15, sl st in next sc, bind off, leaving long tail for sewing.
Embroider nose and mouth, set aside.

Eye “roundies”:
The “roundies” (no clue how to call them) are the little roundy pieces I back up the plastic eyes with, and as you can see they are optional. I made the rabbit without them because I thought she looked cuter like that, so it’s your call J

R-Ch 2, 8 sc in second chain from hook, sl st in first sc, bind off and weave in loose end, put eye through hole if you’re using plastic eyes with safety backings, set aside.

Head:
R1– Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook
R2- 2 sc in each sc around (12 sts)
R3- *Sc 1, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 6 times (18 sts)
R4- *Sc 2, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 6 times (24 sts)

-When picking colors to start the body, keep in mind that we start crocheting the body at the bottom and finish at the neck –so if you’re going to change colors to make a sweater, you should start with “skin” color and later change to the sweater color.

With skin color yarn:

R2- 2 sc in each sc around (12 sts)
R3- *Sc 1, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 6 times (18 sts)

Change to sweater color yarn

R5- Sc 12 through back loops only (though both loops if not making “sleeves”)

Sl st in next sc, bind off leaving long tail for sewing, sew to body.

R2- 2 sc in each of the 5 sc from R1 (10 sts) –ignore the rest of the chain, that’s the mouse’s tail!
R3- *1 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 5 times (15 sts)
R4- *2 sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat 5 times (20 sts)
R5- Sc 20
R6- Sc 20 through back loops only
R7-12: Sc 20

Stuff a little

Position eyes if using plastic ones with safety backings (you can work on them later if you’re embroidering them).

You will need:

Continue to make the wavy edge:

Sew sprinkles to icing.

Assembly:
Place the icing on top of the bottom part, lining up the stitches of the bottom part to the stitches inside the wavy part of the top (so the wavy part won’t be sewed, sew by the part right on top of the waves). Sew around ¾ of the way and fill bottom part with polypellets, beans or rice so the cupcake sits nice, and the top part with fiberfill, cotton balls or stuffing of your choice so it’s nice and soft.
